Describe the role

Name the roles you place and where. The agent finds the companies advertising them now, and who's hiring.

Where the roles are

Open roles are posted on job boards and careers pages. Funding news says who's about to post more.

Open roles are the signal

A role that's been open for weeks is a hiring manager with a problem. That's who answers an agency email.

Your first email

Lead with the role and what you can do about it this week, not with your process.

How to get clients for a recruitment agency

Business development is the half of recruitment most agencies do least of, because it's slow. It gets faster when you only write to companies that are hiring right now, for roles you actually place.

Target open roles, not companies

A company that fits your sector but isn't hiring won't reply. One with a relevant role open, especially one that's been reposted, has a reason to.

Write to the hiring manager

For specialist roles, the head of the team usually feels the vacancy most. Ask for that role in the brief, and HR can come in later.

Keep candidate data out of cold email

Sharing a candidate's details with a prospective client needs that candidate's permission. Anonymised profiles make the point without the risk.

Check the email rules where you sell

In the US, CAN-SPAM allows B2B cold email with a working opt-out. In the UK, limited companies can be emailed with an opt-out, but sole traders and partnerships are treated like individuals. In Germany, commercial email usually needs prior consent even between businesses. This isn't legal advice, so check the market you're contacting.
